It's never too late to start - a last minute course that led to a calm waterbirth with hypnobirthing

The Birth of Darcie

A calm waterbirth with hypnobirthing

"I contacted Louisa when I was 35 weeks pregnant...thinking I was a little late to the hypnobirthing party, but she reassured me that I wasn't. Instead of the group course, we booked a private session from the comfort of our own home.

I asked Louisa if it was beneficial for my partner to be and she said ABSOLUTELY! So if I can give any advice straight away it's to involve your partner straight away so they know how to support you!

From the moment Louisa arrived she put us both at ease and we went through the invaluable course that was going to prepare us for the birth of our little one...

Here is our birth story...

In the two days prior to giving birth I had some lower back sensations and at 39+1 weeks I hoped this was the start of labour.

When Sunday arrived, the feeling in my bottom and back was constant and I was experiencing what I can only describe as 'period cramps' that were coming and going. We decided to have a walk up to our local coffee shop at 1pm that afternoon, with one foot on the pavement and one on the road we climbed the big hill after reading this might help move things along.

When we returned home, my friend came round for dinner and we continued to remain relaxed, enjoying this stage at home. The surges were coming and going more regularly now so I decided to time them... they were now 5 minutes apart. My partner ran me a bath and we stayed home for a little longer.

We were about 40 minutes from Pinderfields and although I wanted to stay home as long as possible, at 8:30pm we decided it was the right time for us to start heading over to the birth centre. My partner got everything ready and we packed the car. This could be the last time we left the house before we met our baby!

The journey in the car was where the surges got more frequent but my partner used the information from Louisa to make the environment as calming as possible.

We arrived at the hospital car park just after 9pm, waited for the next surge to pass and then walked over to the birth centre. They had a room waiting for us as we had phoned ahead to let them know we were on our way. The midwives were incredible from start to finish and for anyone wanting to go down the hypnobirthing route, it's refreshing to know that they actively encourage this too!

I'll be honest, we had no real 'birth plan' and wanted to create our own story as it happened in real time. As the surges continued the midwife asked if we'd like to try the pool. A waterbirth was something I'd hoped for from the beginning so of course we said yes straight away! I had found up to this point that to the best way to get through a surge was to walk around the room or have my partner massage my back. Without him and what he'd picked up from the course, I'm sure my birth story would have been completely different!

Before getting in the birthpool, the midwife showed me how to use the gas and air for if I wanted to use it. My partner helped me into the water and lent over to rub my back and support me through this stage. The calming noise of the water, the music we had playing and the scents we bought with us set the perfect birthing environment. The midwife who supported our journey allowed us to enjoy this time alone and kept intervention to a minimum.

After about half an hour of being in the pool, the midwife asked my partner if he would like to get in, after seeing him in a very awkward position trying to support me and rub my back . Before she could even finish her sentence, he had one foot in the pool. Some might be weirded out by this , but I can't even begin to describe how incredible the experience was. He held me close for the entire labour and knew exactly what to do to help me through it.

During the couple of hours in the pool, I tried to sleep between surges to keep relaxed and reserve as much energy as possible. Alongside breathing techniques, I used the gas and air with the bigger surges.

The midwife was incredible and reassured us that everything was just fine. I felt my waters go in the pool and the sensation in my bottom was much stronger. I knew we were very close to meeting him or her.

During the next surge my body wanted to push and she said she could see a head, so for the next big one just go with it...as I breathed through and pushed down the head was out and we could see blonde hair under the water.

I cuddled up close with my partner as he cried and told me how amazing I was and we said, 'how we couldn't believe this was going to be be the moment!'

The midwife asked my partner if he wanted to catch the baby, but he said he didn't want to leave my side and could she do this for us...and with the next push the baby was out and the midwife untangled the cord and passed her straight to me.

We met our baby GIRL at 1:07am just 4 hours after we arrived at the birth centre and she weighed 5lbs13oz. The most magical moment that we will NEVER forget. We enjoyed skin to skin in the pool for a while and soaked up the beautiful arrival of our little girl.

We are so grateful that we were introduced to hypnobirthing. Although initially skeptical, it completely changed my mindset around giving birth and gave me and my partner so much knowledge and reassurance going into labour. I know we were lucky and not everyone's birth goes this way but I wanted to share the experience of our positive birth."

This stunning birth story was shared by my wonderful client Rachel, who along with her partner Adam, had an incredible birth after completing my 1:1 Essentials Hypnobirthing course. I'm so delighted that what they learned gave them the confidence to prepare for their dream birth and they were able to welcome beautiful baby Darcie into the world with calmness and complete togetherness. Thank you so much for sharing your inspiring story with us and for choosing me to support you in the final stages of your pregnancy. You were the perfect team and it was an absolute pleasure.
