What is Baby Massage?

Baby massage is a wonderful gift to share with your baby.  It is a daily part of life with a new baby in many cultures and has been around for centuries. It is relaxing and soothing for your baby and has many positive effects on the body.

During the practise of baby massage, the muscles and soft tissues of the body are manipulated with the aim of improving wellbeing. Baby massage can help to release tension from busy growing muscles, reduce stress levels and increase feelings of calmness for your baby.

The Many Benefits of Baby Massage...

The benefits of baby massage are helpful in the moment with your baby and also long lasting. The importance of nurturing touch for babies from birth is well understood.  When a baby is born into a confusing world from the safety of the womb, skin to skin contact and being held is reassuring and helps to regulate your baby’s temperature, heart rate and blood pressure and lowers stress hormones in the body.  Baby massage is an extension of the skin to skin contact your young baby craves.

Relief...

Baby massage can bring relief from many common conditions suffered by babies, including teething, colic, trapped wind, constipation, teething pain, blocked sinuses, congestion, muscle ache, growing pains, dry skin and sensitivity to touch.  It can be really difficult for a parent when your baby is experiencing discomfort and being armed with a mini toolkit of techniques to support your baby can help you to feel more confident and in control.

Relaxation...

Massaging your baby aids relaxation. Tension will be released from the muscles and stress hormones will be lowered in the body. You and your baby will both produce feel good hormones during the massage which lower blood pressure, heart rate and increase appetite. You may find your baby eats and sleep better after their massage

Developement & Stimulation...

All the systems of your baby's body are very immature.  By stimulating your baby’s skin you can have a boosting effect on all the systems of your baby’s body, including the musculoskeletal, immune, circulatory, lymphatic and digestive systems.

Massage boosts oxygen and nutrient flow and removes toxins from the body. It supports brain development by helping to mature the nervous system and improve the connection between the brain and systems of the body.

Massage increases your baby’s awareness of their own body and helps them to meet important milestones for example, rolling and sitting up.

Bonding & Attachment...

Baby massage can help to deepen the bond between parent and baby.  A strong early bond has been shown to enhance the emotional and social development of babies and children and these early relationships can act as a template for subsequent relationships later in life. A secure attachment also gives a baby more confidence to explore the world around them, helping them to become independent as they grow.

Baby massage is the perfect activity to deepen the bond between parent and baby.  It includes the key factors needed for a healthy bond, including eye contact, transfer of smell, sound of voice and production of oxytocin, a hormone that helps us to fall in love. You will spend time singing  and talking to your baby and will use positive body language to communicate your feelings to them. Baby Massage encourages instinctive parenting and responding to a baby’s subtle non-verbal behaviours. It helps parents to get to know and understand their baby.
